In Book III of the “Guy Erma and Son of Empire Series, Exile,” author Sally Ann Melia quite nicely ties up the many threads she sewed as we met the many characters in the three-volume work. For example, Emperor Frederon, one of those whose behind-the-scenes machinations resulted in the initial kidnapping of Teo, heir to the throne of Freyne and, ultimately, the empire, tried to use the incident to force Teo's mother and regent Sayginn into a marriage to produce heirs for the empire and failed. Instead, he lost Sayginn to Karl Valvanchi, a Zaracan noble who Frederon cannot abide. And, then, there's Chart Segat, who exploited it to retain control of the Dome and its forces. Poor Chart bet it all and lost on his very errant throw of the political dice. That throw was costly in more ways than one. You see, though Guy became quite important to the young monarch – Teo goes from prince to monarch and proves he deserves it. And, there's Guy's mother, model Lhoulhou, whose end is so sad.
It goes on and on as each major character's fate is finally made clear by Melia. Indeed, Melia draws some interesting fates for her characters that are quite fitting. In most cases, they are quite justified, too. (Segat's fate is especially interesting.)
“Exile” is the culmination of Melia's three-volume work, “Guy Erma and the Son of Empire.” Throughout the journey through the books, one can see that Melia has a firm hand on the plot, never letting things become confusing and finally pulling things together quite nicely at the conclusion. Sally Ann Melia is an author who knows how to write. Her three-volume work “Guy Erma and the Son of Empire” proves it.

Exile Guy Erma and the Son of Empire Book 3 eBook Sally Ann Melia Reviews
I had read the first book of the series and the present book Exile is definitely and improvement of the characters. I had loved the first book too with the golden gorans, shape shifters, Dome Elite boys and of course the protagonists- Prince Teodor and Guy Erma, but, here the metamorphosis of the boys into young responsible adults is truly remarkable. At the beginning of the story the prince seems to be the weaker of the two with Guy encouraging him to do get rid of his weaknesses by singing out loud and also physically assisting him in climbs and other areas, but right during the flight from Dome Elite, Guy witnesses a new prince who is capable of many heroic actions that starts from ruthlessly killings Battle Borgs to saving both Guy and himself by swimming through a watery tunnel. In fact the transformation of Prince continues as one moment he is a shy youngster exchanging shy kisses with girls and next a royal diplomat as he meets his rescuers.
Guy complements the Prince and where the prince is weak, Guy is strong and vice versa. However, the whole book is very interesting and would make an excellent read for any age group but particularly for a young adult for there are many things to learn apart from enjoy the novel. The book teaches you about honor, integrity, friendship, loyalty and decisiveness. The action is clean, fast and intriguing although as a series the story still remain incomplete. Now I am waiting for the next book to find out further line of action and I am sure the writer Sally Ann has more treats for us.
“Exile” is the third book in the “Guy Erma and the Son of Empire” series, and is a surprisingly fulfilling read for just 150 pages. Those who have missed out on the first two books in the series may be initially confused by the fact that the chapter numbers begin from 26, but they will still be privy to some interesting information. For instance, there are pictures of some of the characters, many of them in an art style that helps the reader to get a three-dimensional feel for them. There is also a series of emails at the very beginning that helps to establish some of the political world. So while it is certainly recommended to check out the first two books, there are some tools to guide you on your path if you by some chance start out with this one.
One notable aspect of the book is that while the two main characters, Guy Erma and Teodor Freyne, are now friends, they still clash in some ways. Guy Erma is still from a much less privileged background than Teodor the prince. This shows through in even the simplest of conversations, such as when Teodor asks Guy about his favorite food. The differences between the new friends help to underscore their innocence, which is important when your space opera features two 13-year-olds as the key protagonists.
But while they may be young and someone innocent, the obstacles before them appear almost insurmountable. The characters may make the book seem like young adult fare, but the intricacy of the plot helps to establish these series as true science fiction. This is not the sort of young adult book in which the characters face no real danger. There are numerous real threats, not the least among them are the deadly Battle Borgs. This particular threat also establishes the importance of supporting characters such as Nell Valvanchi. Without giving too much away, suffice to say that our heroes would be nothing without the acquaintances they have met and the friends they have made.
This is true of most great space operas, as well as many great young adult novels, and it is what allows a very talented author to blend the two with expert precision. This is an amazing read, especially recommended for younger readers but certainly accessible to older readers who are in for some fun sci-fi that presents a light yet satisfying reading experience.
