Dancing with Demons The Authorized Biography of Dusty Springfield eBook Penny Valentine Vicki Wickham Reviews
Book's contents live up to it's tabloid title. The cover photo they chose tells you a lot. Why didn't they use the famous "Happy Dusty at Christmas" photo they stated they just loved? The one with her "Smiling her joyful beautiful smile?" Because that one didn't match their crazy tabloid title, that's why. For Dusty fans, this book will be overall a heavy, painful, and hard read. It isn't written with a sense of compassion. It also takes liberties in making assumptions. Ex. Author states Dusty should have never recorded the 'Soft Core' song as it was "probably" written about her from a former lover, and that it was "masochistic" of her to record it. Please! Just the opposite. I think Dusty turned the table on the ex-lover (if it's the case that it was even about her) and fed her lyrics back to her. She performed it live with great humor as well. Dusty would hate this book. I can promise you she didn't 'Authorize' it. I didn't buy it full price due to this fact. Why reward these authors? One Dusty called a friend. Bought it second hand for $4 bucks and am glad I've got one of 'em out of circulation now! Clueless authors painted Dusty's depression as not being a legitimate illness during her life. It was only when she got cancer that they felt she really had a "legitimate" illness. Amazing Dusty accomplished all that she did throughout her life, given her issues. Dusty dropped out of high school and started singing when she was 15 in clubs. She experienced international super stardom from a very young age (early twenties). Too young of an age for just about anyone to handle life after having 10 years of super star success. After she moved to America in the 70's, she left behind her support system, had no management, and her career was declining. After being more popular than the Queen of England for a decade, this would be a hard thing for anyone to adjust to. Dusty participated in California's music scene (and what came with it, the drinking and drug culture in the 1970's). 90% of all singers and musicians during that time indulged and it wasn't looked down on like it is today. Dusty continued performing around American and recorded 3 LP's in 70's. They were critically acclaimed. So why give this book 2 stars instead of 1??? To be fair, I actually did learn from a few sentences some nice things about Dusty I didn't know She had a great joy and passion for traveling around the world (getting the maps out and plotting out her destinations when she was on tour). Learned she was overly generous to friends, co-workers, and lovers. She was a World History buff. Best thing in the book was a quote from Norma, learned that Dusty really did know how great of a singer she was, "People said she didn't know her own ability, how good she was. She knew it alright, that's why it had to be perfect." Loved that line. It rings true. Dusty started enjoying success again and her life turned around for the better in 1986. She was pretty content throughout the remainder of her life. Dusty was a female pioneer in the studio, a one of a kind world class singer, a complex, sensitive, eccentric, mega talented, intelligent, down to earth, impulsive, humorous, animal adoring, kind person. She was also a flawed human being like the rest of us (one character flaw was that she was always running late and kept people waiting for hours. At times she could be a Diva! Next, would apologize sincerely). Best book I ever read on her was "Scissors and Paste" as it is mostly a collection of Dusty's interviews. Next choice would be "Dusty" by Lucy O' Brien. And, "The Complete Dusty Springfield." It is mostly a history catalog of all of Dusty's recordings and performances (500 pages worth of accomplishments).
A pitiable self-destructive singer with wasted talent. From what I gleened from Miss Valentine's well researched bio, Miss Springfield was an overall pain in the neck.
I don't think it would be to hard to add the photos to a version of a book. I don't know why this one hasn't any.
More than I expected from a biography, Dancing with Demons tells Dusty's story with compassion and honesty. She will forever be a legend.
Loved it. I loved her voice from a very young age and had no idea about her life. So glad to have read this. Sensitive and appropriate writing.
